To Fly or Not to Fly?

“Develop interest in life as you see it; in people, things, literature, music-the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself.”  Henry Miller

Life held sweet surprises for us when we raised our three daughters. We were strict, but we opened the door for the future very wide. Consequently all daughters went away to college, the closest being five hours away. The requirements for our girls in high school were – 1. You must play a musical instrument (for the appreciation of music is an invisible beauty), 2. You must take a foreign language (for the learning of other cultures gives one a broad perspective), 3. You must play a sport (for the conditioning of the body and competition creates high standards). ….. Our girls were taught ‘the sky is the limit. YOU set the goals, YOU achieve the dreams.’ Daughter #1 went to the Air Force Academy and became a Family Practice doctor, Daughter #2 achieved her PhD in NuroBiology, Daughter #2 went to the Naval Academy and flew helicopters. Our two youngest daughters are now stay-at-home moms each raising four children. We have a total of 12 grandchildren. We are proud of all our children, but especially happy that they chose paths to fulfill some dreams, be VERY independent people, and very hard workers. Being a parent is the most difficult ‘job’ in the world. Children are a legacy, the only legacy we will leave behind. Strict rules, consistency, freedom, …. thy all worked for us. Please don’t ask about the challenges …. we had many. Life is not a bed of roses by any means, but life can be very fulfilling. May the pretty little butterflies of happiness fly around you, your family, and those you love. May the paths you choose to follow bring some happy times to the people around you that you love.
